Water softeners are rather inexpensive. They require no electrical power, special tools or dangerous recharge process. This system is extremely simple requiring only salt to regenerate. With its minimal cost, only a few dollars in simple salt is required to provide years of hassle free soft water.
Deionizing systems use multiple resin medias which are quite expensive. The recharging process requires the user to remove or discard the media costing upwards of $100 dollars per recharge. Otherwise the media is required to be shipped back to the manufacturer to be recharged in an almost biohazard process to be cleaned. This can be time consuming, messy and expensive.
Reverse Osmosis systems have a very high initial cost which can range from 5k to 15k dollars. They require electrical power to work and typically have multiple filters which will need to be replaced frequently and are quite expensive.
